Easily became one of my favorite spots on my first trip to Dublin this past spring. Outstanding selection of their own brews, especially the XXXX Stout, Wrassler’s. Guinness is like water in comparison. And, for a country known less for its food than for its beer, I found their food to be excellent, especially the Beef & Stout. Delicious! I am making a return trip to Dublin this spring, and the first thing I will do is return to the Porterhouse.
I found this place one Sunday afternoon while looking for the seminal oysters & Guiness experience – not at all an easy find in Dublin. What I found in the Porterhouse was a great example of a brewbar – good and varied inhouse brews as well as Irish, European and internationals. Nice chill environment, had a seat by the front window in the food area, but there are more relaxed seating areas from memory. I was there in Sept ’05 so I don’t remember a lot of specifics, but the atmosphere was great, and the beer selection excellent – a perfect excuse to try as many as possible. Samplers are catered for really well with several options from a number of beer varieties available. Great beer menu which you can buy for €1 (high quality, so why steal it for this price?) – told me what I already knew about Australian beer. So I settle on 1/2 dozen oysters and a pint of their oyster stout, about €11 I think – I don’t drink darks at all, but it was Dublin and as was proved to me at the Guiness brewery up the road, it always tastes good from the source.
